Overview

Five concentrations allow students to gain additional expertize in one area of pest management. Within the IPM curriculum, each student selects one concentration. The basic curriculum is the same for all concentrations, but the courses available as restricted electives (17 credits) differ for each concentration, allowing students to specialize in the area of pest management that interests them.

Co-op Program

An integral part of the IPM curriculum is the required cooperative work program. These scheduled work semesters allow students an opportunity to gain practical experience through productive employment under realistic, competitive circumstances. It also provides students with a means to apply and test the theory and training they have received in the classroom.

Through the co-op program, students network with others in their field and develop contacts and references that can be utilized for years to come. Co-op students are compensated by their employer with wages determined by the employer.

This department offers interdisciplinary programs of study with the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences leading to the Bachelor of Science and Master of Agriculture (non-thesis) degrees in Agricultural Pest Management. Effective management of pest problems in production agriculture requires a broad base of knowledge in the pest disciplines and practical field experience.

The undergraduate Agricultural Pest Management major features a strong core of courses in the three pest disciplines (entomology, plant pathology and weed science) and a summer internship combined with strong background in agricultural, biological and physical sciences. The student’s complete program will be formulated in the department of his/her choice. These curricula are designed to meet the needs both of students who wish to pursue advanced degrees (M.A., M.S., Ph.D.) and of students who wish to terminate their higher education with a baccalaureate degree.

Students will be encouraged to select electives which best suit their career objectives. For example, students who plan to pursue graduate studies beyond the B.S. degree should plan to take such courses as calculus, physics, foreign language, invertebrate zoology and others which will provide a stronger basis for advanced study in the discipline.

Graduates are well prepared for employment with agricultural industries such as chemical, seed or biotechnology companies; state and federal research, extension and regulatory agencies; agricultural consulting; farmer’s cooperatives; nurseries, home and garden centers, greenhouse plant production; and corporate farms.

In today’s job market, insurance offers many interesting and varied career opportunities for both women and men. A number of insurance graduates have been hired as underwriters for insurance companies. As such, they make decisions on which insurance applications will be accepted or rejected by the company. This job requires knowledge of insurance plus the ability to analyzes the risk factors involved in each application. Other graduates are hired as claims representatives to adjust insured losses for the insured. Insurance companies also hire insurance graduates as investment specialists, sales representatives, and actuarial trainees. A growing field is benefits specialists who manage health and life insurance programs for employees of manufacturing firms, service organizations, banks, and even large farm enterprises. THE COLLEGE AND THE UNIVERSITY

Mississippi State University’s College of Business is one of the largest academic divisions of the University. Enrollment exceeds 2100 undergraduate and 100 graduate students. Organized in 1915, it is also the oldest such college in the state. In addition, the College of Business is a full member of the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the duly recognized accrediting agency for professional schools of business.

Mississippi State University is the largest institution of higher learning in the state, with approximately 16,500 students. The 4,200 acre campus is spacious and beautifully landscaped, having won a national award for the best maintained university grounds in the United States. Mississippi State is located adjacent to Starkville, a town of more than 18,500 in the east-central part of the state. The small-town atmosphere of Starkville, combined with Mississippi State University’s quiet, family atmosphere, makes for the ideal learning environment. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

An applicant for admission should hold a high school diploma and have an ACT score of at least 18. A student whose scores are insufficient may be considered for admission if he or she exceeds the minimum required in the other criterion and has a well-written statement of purpose and strong reference letters.

Insurance is a people-to-people industry. Nothing is manufactured. Aside from normal office equipment, there is very little machinery involved except for computers of all types. Primarily, insurance is people performing all kinds of services for other people, whether it is explaining a policy, investigating a claim, or analyzing a risk.
