MBA with Accounting Emphasis at Missouri Southern State University
Missouri and most surrounding states require a minimum of 150 semester hours of college credit for any individual sitting for the CPA examination after June 30, 1999. For all practical purposes, this means that a master’s degree will be required before one can take the CPA examination. The intent of this action is to provide a higher level of professionalism for the accounting profession. The MBA with Accounting Emphasis is offered by the Department of Accounting, Economics and Finance in the Melvin D. and Valorie G. Booth College of Business and Professional Studies. This program is designed to fully meet the recommendations of the AICPA and State Regulations. This program should prepare the individual for either the CPA or CMA examination. In addition, the program is designed to provide students with an excellent background, not only in accounting, but in other areas of business that will prepare them for future administrative opportunities. To enter the MBA-Accounting Emphasis program, a student must:
Meet all admission requirements of the Graduate School for any master’s degree program.
Meet all college and department admission requirements for the MBA accounting emphasis program.
Although an undergraduate degree in accounting in not a required to enroll in the program, it is designed for those students with either academic or professional experience in the area. Additional coursework in accounting would be required to pursue the CPA designation.
Follow all policies concerning admission and retention specified by the Melvin D. and Valorie G. Booth College of Business and Professional Studies for the MBA degree.
Graduate Course Requirements
To earn the degree, the student must complete the following required courses* along with approved electives to total 33 graduate hours with an average grade of “B” or better this is in addition to any undergraduate prerequisites or deficiencies required by the MBA program:

** Students who did not complete a course in international business at the undergraduate level must complete 55-631 International Business as one of the elective courses. Students who did not complete a course in management information systems at the undergraduate level must complete 44-623 Information Systems as one of the elective courses.
*** 55-618 Executive Seminar must be taken during the last trimester of enrollment.
Comprehensive Examination
Students must pass the Graduate Management Business Exam or the Booth College comprehensive Exam as a condition of graduation. The requirements for the Booth College Exam allow students to choose three essay question for response from five general MBA areas with the following exception. If the student fails to earn at least a grade of B in all accounting courses then two questions are responded to out of the five general MBA areas and one question is responded to out of two question from the accounting emphasis areas.
Research Component
In addition to the above course requirements, a research component must be on file in the office of the dean, Melvin D. and Valorie G. Booth College of Business and Professional Studies, prior to applying for approval to take the comprehensive examination. The research component may consist of any original individual or group research paper completed as a requirement for any MBA graduate course with instructor approval. A research component form may be obtained from the Graduate Office or from the Office of the Dean, Melvin D. and Valorie G. Booth College of Business and Professional Studies. The student will complete the research component form, obtain the signature of the instructor of the course, and return the form and a copy of the research paper to the dean’s office. The dean’s office will forward the research component form to the Graduate Office and retain the copy of the research paper in the student’s file.
