UG in MChem Chemistry Applied Chemistryat Aston University

We cater for the needs of ‘pure’ chemists whilst providing the opportunity to explore the industrial, pharmaceutical, technological and commercial dimensions of chemistry. Business and other specialist topics are built into our courses enabling you to develop valuable management skills. You share your first year with chemical engineers, to gain a deeper insight into industrial processes. You can also elect to spend a year on placement in industry.
Building on our established BSc courses, the MChem requires an additional year of study. The programme emphasises the commercial as well as industrial application of chemistry. It aims to expand your fundamental chemical knowledge, refine your professional, scientific and technical skills and to develop your personal, communication and management skills. Applied chemists will also spend a year on placement in industry.

BEng Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry at Aston University

To obtain an integrated understanding of chemistry and its associated industries, both at the molecular level and in terms of engineering, processes and technology, an integrated curriculum of chemistry and chemical engineering topics is essential. Our academic configuration at Aston in which chemical engineers and chemists work closely alongside each other is ideal for this.
In the first two years students follow a curriculum with equal weighting on chemistry and chemical engineering topics. For the shorter BEng degree, students can focus their final year more towards chemistry or towards chemical engineering as they prefer.
BEng Programme
The BEng in Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry is based on the MEng programme and is one year shorter and leads to a Bachelor’s rather than a Master’s degree.

The BEng in chemical engineering is designed to develop your engineering skills, in the context of a firm grounding in chemistry. To ensure this you share a common first year with chemists. In later years you go on to specialise at a more advanced level in the core engineering topics. In addition you study the important topics of business, management and sustainability, all the while developing and applying problem-solving skills. Your computer modelling skills will also be developed with a strong emphasis on process simulation.
You have the option to spend an additional year on placement in industry after your second academic year. Many students take advantage of this option, and find the experience of great benefit both in their development as an engineer and in their final year performance.

MEng Chemical Engineering at Aston University

The MEng in chemical engineering is designed to develop your engineering skills, in the context of a firm grounding in chemistry. To ensure this you share a common first year with chemists. In later years you go on to specialise at a more advanced level in the core engineering topics. The MEng builds on the BEng course, but is an extended, broader-based qualification requiring four years of academic study, as well as an optional industrial placement year. The course is enhanced by additional subjects including innovation management, process synthesis, advanced process simulation and a major research project.
The MEng is a challenging and demanding course of study which will enable you to progress more readily after graduation to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, which will in turn enable you to aim for the highest levels in industry.
