MS in Resource Management & Conservation at Antioch University

The Resource Management and Conservation (RMC) Program differs from traditional natural resource management degrees in that it provides the theory and skills combined with extensive internship opportunities so that our graduates not only leave the program with a marketable area of expertise but with documented experience as proven environmental professionals.
The RMC mission is to prepare environmental professionals to be effective agents of change that can address the realities and pressures of growth and development with the need to preserve the environment upon which society is dependent.

Organizational Strategy & Decision Making
Competency Area: Purposeful Systemic Change
In this capstone course, students will draw on and apply knowledge and skills acquired from the entire curriculum to solve organization challenges from the perspective of the Chief Executive or senior management team member. This course will hone one’s ability to effectively diagnose challenges, determine options, and make decisions using both individual and group decision making skills. At the completion of the course you will increase your ability to see and address organization wide challenges from a range of perspectives and be better prepared for organization leadership and decision making.
Developing Human Resources
Competency Area: Management & Decision Making
Effective managers know how to foster workplace culture, practices, and relationships that support learning, satisfaction, and strong performance among employees (the “talent” upon which organizations rely). Employees in turn commit their knowledge, skills, and energy to the organization’s success. Through a combination of in-class and online activities, students identify principles of effective talent development and gain skills in specific aspects of that practice, including hiring, onboarding, performance development and evaluation, and addressing unsatisfactory performance.

The course is designed to introduce students to the nature and methodology of inquiry, research, and evaluation and look at what learning and valid knowledge can be gotten from formalized research approaches. The course will focus on both quantitative and qualitative research paradigms and their application in the realm of organizational research and evaluation, especially as it involves issues of sustainability. We will examine the nature of various cultures of inquiry and methodologies. The course will help us become more adept consumers of research by other people and provide us guidance and practice in formulating productive research questions and designs, and then allow students to choose one of these research options in preparation for their Practicum project.

The practicum is a facilitated, independent project. In the fall semester, students identify a focus and develop a strategy for a project, and then conduct research and implement project management tools to create and meet the goals of the project. Activities include brainstorming possible project topics, choosing one, and conducting a review of the relevant literature, creating an annotated bibliography and creating a reference list, specifying goals and expectations, and preparing a timeline for the implementation of the project.

For organizations to thrive in today’s complex and dynamic environment, organization leaders and managers increasingly need knowledge on how to engage organizational members in systemic change that is understood and supported within the organization. Models, methods, and techniques for leading and facilitating planned short and long-term change efforts at the group and organization level will be introduced, as well as ways of responding to unplanned change. Change strategies and methods will be evaluated for application and fit with the intended change outcomes, organization needs, and organization culture. We will examine leadership behaviors, perspectives, and attributes that support effective change efforts.

An historical and contemporary overview of systems and complexity theories will be presented with coverage of the foundational scientific principles that govern all sustainable systems. Students will be introduced to models and processes which will give them the capacity to evaluate any action or policy regarding sustainability in a variety of complex systems. This evaluation process will see CSR as based on the “triple bottom line” – assessing management organizational practices in terms of their effectiveness in creating economically sustainable organizations that are humane, and socially and environmentally responsible.
